'White Women Saving Brown Women from Brown Men'

20/4/2010

Feminism has often been accused of privileging white, middle class interests. Where white 'First World' feminist have sought to 'save' the oppressed woman of the other 'Third World', they have often participated in a colonising process. That is, men of colour become demonised as savage, brutal and uncivilised while the women are presented as perpetual victims incapable of accessing autonomy as they lack 'feminist' (read: middle class white feminist) values. In traversing a sometimes tense relationship between neocolonial and feminist politics, there needs to be greater consideration of the possibilities for cross-cultural engagements with different feminist knowledges.

How are language, class, race and nationality implicated in forming and implementing feminist ideals?

To what extent has feminism been implemented in the service of ethnocentric/racist/classist ideologies?

Do men (of differing racial, class, sexuality, age backgrounds) become demonised in the process?

Sexual Assault and Intimacy

Experiences of sexual assault and intimacy are culturally and historically specific. What is considered violent or coercive to one person, is not necessarily so for another. Terms such as 'consent', 'ethics' and 'respect' have been used as terms to frame our understanding of a 'healthy' or 'good' relationship. This is counterposed with 'coercive', 'humiliating' and 'degrading' conduct that is indicative of an abusive relationship. But what do these terms mean?

What is the experience of intimacy in the context of gender relations within patriarchy?

Does it differ between same-sex attracted or queer people as compared to heterosexual people?
